چکیده

We present surface brightness fluctuations (SBFs) in the near–IR for 191 Magellanic star clusters available in the Second Incremental and All Sky Data releases of the Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS), and compare them with SBFs of Fornax Cluster galaxies and with predictions from stellar population models as well. We also construct color–magnitude diagrams (CMDs) for these clusters using the 2MASS Point Source Catalog (PSC). Our goals are twofold. First, to provide an empirical calibration of near–IR SBFs, given that existing stellar population synthesis models are particularly discrepant in the near–IR. Second, whereas most previous SBF studies have focused on old, metal rich populations, this is the first application to a system with such a wide range of ages (∼ 106 to more than 1010 yr, i.e., 4 orders of magnitude), at the same time that the clusters have a very narrow range of metallicities (Z ∼ 0.0006 – 0.01, ie., 1 order of magnitude only). Since stellar population synthesis models predict a more complex sensitivity of SBFs to metallicity and age in the near–IR than in the optical, this analysis offers a unique way of disentangling the effects of age and metallicity. This research has made use of the NASA/ IPAC Infrared Science Archive, which is operated by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, California Institute of Technology, under contract with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. Joint Analysis of Near-infrared Properties and Surface Brightness Fluctuations of Lmc Star Clusters

Surface brightness fluctuations have been proved to be a very powerful technique to determine the distance and characterize the stellar content in extragalactic systems. Nevertheless, before facing the problem of stellar content in distant galaxies, we need to calibrate the method onto nearby well-known systems. In this paper we analyze the properties at J and Ks bands of a sample of 19 star cl...

The Star Clusters of the Small Magellanic Cloud: Structural Parameters

We present structural parameters for 204 stellar clusters in the Small Magellanic Cloud derived from fitting King and Elson, Fall, & Freeman model profiles to the V-band surface brightness profiles as measured from the Magellanic Clouds Photometric Survey images. Both King and EFF profiles are satisfactory fits to the majority of the profiles although King profiles are generally slightly superi...

Surface Brightness Fluctuations of Fornax Cluster Galaxies: Calibration of Infrared Sbfs and Evidence for Recent Star Formation

We have measured KS-band (2.0–2.3 μm) surface brightness fluctuations (SBFs) of 19 early-type galaxies in the Fornax cluster. Fornax is ideally suited both for calibrating SBFs as distance indicators and for using SBFs to probe the unresolved stellar content of early-type galaxies. Combining our results with published data for other nearby clusters, we calibrate KS-band SBFs using HST Cepheid c...

Stellar luminosity functions of rich star clusters in the Large Magellanic Cloud

We show the results of deep V and I HST photometry of 6 rich star clusters in the Large Magellanic Cloud with different ages and metallicities. The number of stars with measured magnitudes in each cluster varies from about 3000 to 10000 stars. We build stellar density and surface brightness profiles for the clusters and extract half-light radii and other structural parameters for each. We also ...

A Direct Distance to the LMC Cepheid HV 12198 from the Infrared Surface Brightness Technique

We report on a first application of the infrared surface brightness technique on a Cepheid in the Large Magellanic Cloud, the variable HV 12198 in the young globular cluster NGC1866. From this one star, we determine a distance modulus of 18.42 ± 0.10 (random and systematic uncertainty) to the cluster. When the results on further member Cepheids in NGC1866 become available, we expect to derive t...
